As profound as our problems are, that’s how profound the level of transformation we have to achieve in order to be able to solve them.

For me it’s in the Declaration of Independence. With 11 states not even requiring half a year of American civics, history of government, too many Americans grow up now not really appreciating or even learning the American story.

The real story is a huge dichotomy: we were founded on the most aspirational principles, but even among those who signed the Declaration of Independence 41 out of the 56 were slaveowners. The constant struggle between those two faces of the American character - that IS our story.
