For me it’s in the Declaration of Independence. With 11 states not even requiring half a year of American civics, history of government, too many Americans grow up now not really appreciating or even learning the American story.

The Democrats oppose the Declaration of Independence, though.
The Democrats walk away from that idea every day. The full quote: We hold these *truths* to be *self-evident*, that all men are created equal…*endowed by their Creator* with *certain* *unalienable rights*, that among these are *life*, *liberty*, and *pursuit of happiness* >
You're right but there's a big missing element to that, emotional attachment to what the words really mean. "Experience is the only prophecy of wise men" - Alphonse de Lamartine.
Well said @marwilliamson unfortunately many immigrants come for the fruits and do not care for the history. What will happen when immigrants outweigh the people who wrote the history? Statues will fall.

The real story is a huge dichotomy: we were founded on the most aspirational principles, but even among those who signed the Declaration of Independence 41 out of the 56 were slaveowners. The constant struggle between those two faces of the American character - that IS our story.
