People are pretty sophisticated about drugs & alcohol; we get that if you got too far you could die. That's why people stage interventions. But when it comes to climate change and encroaching fascism, too many people still go into an "It'll never happen" kind of magical thinking.

People in general tend to wait until they see evidence of something before they decide it is a problem. When others fabricate evidence as a means of convincing them, it makes them less likely to believe it is real. Maybe too many people cried wolf.
