We should view it as a core principle of American justice: once someone has paid their debt to society, the debt has been paid. We should be welcoming people back into society & encouraging them to fulfill their civic responsibilities, not creating obstructions to their doing so.
The Sentencing Project released a new study estimating that 5.2 million people will be barred from voting in the 2020 election due to a felony conviction. In 2016, that number was over 6 million. Progress, but still a long way to go. sentencingproject.org/wp-con…

If the justice system works – and clearly it is not perfect - then when someone is released from prison theoretically they have been rehabilitated. Are you under the impression that a constant reminder of their shame will aid them in living a more righteous life? I don’t see it.

Paying a debt to society ≠ being rehabilitated Both can happen while incarcerated, but the being rehabbed is entirely voluntary A debt(crime) can be repaid(prison) & the lien holder (us citizens) still be within their rights to decline further loans (votes)
