We should view it as a core principle of American justice: once someone has paid their debt to society, the debt has been paid. We should be welcoming people back into society & encouraging them to fulfill their civic responsibilities, not creating obstructions to their doing so.
The Sentencing Project released a new study estimating that 5.2 million people will be barred from voting in the 2020 election due to a felony conviction. In 2016, that number was over 6 million. Progress, but still a long way to go. sentencingproject.org/wp-con…

Violent criminals, pedophiles, rapists, should decide the laws for the rest of us? You're pandering and it's pitiful.

We do welcome them back into society and encourage them to become productive members. But part of sentencing is you give things up. You give up time of your life which is temporary. The permanent things are having a criminal record that follows you and your ability to vote.

This is a cause near and dear to my heart 1st hand. CJS reform. You have to fight and claw to get rights back and not all are restored. I applied & had my voting rights restored but others are denied non violent btw 10 yrs sober too. Thk u HiPow.

I firmly believe that justice shouldn't be based on punishment or retribution at all (I guess "paying a debt" falls under those somehow), but merely on deterrence and protection of society from dangerous individuals via incarceration.

Yes! AND there's no reason to ever take away that right to begin with. Today, most of the civilized world considers automatic disenfranchisements resulting from convictions to be against human rights anyway, and for good reason

i don't think we should take away anyone's franchise in the first place -- least of all people who are completely at the mercy of the state. what authority is there under "consent of the governed" to incarcerate people if they have no democratic power over that government? none!
