If you're terrified you don't understand the distinction between a constitutional republic and a "rank" democracy. Heard of oppression of the few by the many? In a rank democracy a majority could enslave a minority simply by a vote. A republic protects against such abuses.

Even more terrifying is reading people make excuses for this.

Democracy has given me a horrible HOA, do-nothing school boards, and politicians that are in office forever without actually accomplishing anything. It's good that we are a Republic. Otherwise the mob rule at a Federal level would destroy this country.
