So strange how many people resist someone telling them that they deserve more, particularly given that the money is from taxes that they themselves paid. People have been brainwashed to expect - even to want, in some perverse way - less rather than more from their government.

Why not just skip the middle man and let them keep their money and get the things they want, for themselves.

Because an individual cannot supply all the things they need for themselves. Healthcare, education, environmental protection etc. must be paid for at least in part by the federal government.

I was a culprit of this. For many years folks would tell me to apply for a certain Veteran’s health benefit and I kept telling myself I was not deserving of it.

I agree, but I think that’s the divide. Poor and working people are taught we have to work hard, be responsible, pull ourselves up. Wealthy and the well off (many, not all) are taught go take it how ever you can.
