Just as there’s a special criminal category for violent assault that’s an expression of bigotry (hate crime), there should be a special category for violent assault (such as driving car into a crowd of protestors) that’s intended as a direct effort to suppress peaceable assembly.

I think this might be the first tweet I've seen from you that I strongly disagree with. Maybe you meant everyone involved should have been arrested? These protests block roads meant for vehicles in the first place, and there was nothing peaceful about the mob pursuing the driver.

It's insane that politically suppressive violence, class-based violence, and gender-based violence are excluded from our concept of "hate crimes", right? The point of "hate crimes" sentencing enhancement is to punish people using violence to terrorize particular population groups
