The pursuit of power is the inherent nature of politics. The reason politics is so divisive is because everyone is fighting for the same reigns of power. The solution is to decrease the power of government and to disperse it to the local level as much as possible.

Or at least figuring out how to get people to understand in the long term a lot of what they are supporting is against their own self interests. That they have tunnel vision.
