You're vastly overstating the role Americans played in defeating the Nazis. You're thinking of the Soviets.

During World War II, fascists and Nazis were trying to take over the world and Americans marshaled all our efforts to push them back. Today, Americans are deciding whether or not to give them a second term.

Part of this American mythology is that they played a decisive role in destroying the Nazi war machine in WWII. They didn't. The Soviets shouldered the brunt, losing 27 million. In comparison, the US only lost 400,000.

Simply absurd. And such a slap in the face of 257,000 Americans who died. The Russians fought the Nazis heroically, but so did the Europeans and the Americans.

the americans and europeans held off opening a western front ignoring soviet pleas when they finally made a move it was to snatch as much territory as they could before the soviets took it, lend lease was useful but that was just business, dday when it came was a sideshow

Yeah, that 1/4 million includes the Japanese half of the War, contrasted with the 26 million people the USSR lost fighting the Nazis. Side note: the US murdered about that many civilians (1/4 million) in Japan, with just 2 bombs.

There's a lot of mythmaking about WWII. The US invaded continental Europe on D-day mostly because the Allies were worried the European resistance was going to start taking over countries.

Russians know it was a desperate team effort to defeat fascism. On the 50th anniversary of V-E Day, 1995, as the U.S Marine Band marched onto Red Square, Russian veterans w WWII medals wept , hugged me & thanked the US for keeping them alive w food, clothing, arms & equipment.
