During World War II, fascists and Nazis were trying to take over the world and Americans marshaled all our efforts to push them back. Today, Americans are deciding whether or not to give them a second term.

We didn't really though, FDR went against public sentiment by fighting the Nazis, the majority of Americans in polls were in favor of not interfering with the Nazis

That wasn’t true after Pearl Harbor. At that point Americans supported us getting into the war.

True, but again that was because we were attacked, we didn't particularly care about defeating Fascism or Nazism in their own right. A Gallup poll done in the summer of 1941 showed that 79% of Americans would prefer to prevent war with Germany if possible.

Yes, and then once Pearl Harbor happened the entire country got behind the war effort.

Makes you think how that was allowed to happen

But there was still doubt on if Congress would declare War on Germany, or limit it to just Japan. Germany declaring first saved FDR from a possible US declaration that did not include the Nazis.

Even Japanese Americans who were put in concentration camps & had their lives, property & businesses stolen. You get many things right but you romanticize the past. We are not the good guys.

1/ As Winston Churchill said, “History is written by the victors.” We are slowly awakening to the fact that we’ve been lied to. We need to learn our *complete* history. If you aren’t already familiar with him, I highly recommend following Jared Yates Sexton @JYSexton.
2/ The US entering WWII was done out of self interest to protect ourself, but the US was both hero & persecutor. Hitler learned from the US’s racists laws & the Nuremberg Laws themselves reflect direct American influence.
Once Pearl Harbor happened your country and mine declared all Japanese people enemies of the state, then they stole their property and deported them to concentration camps. Our countries did that with broad support.

3/ “Not even South Africa had a set of relevant race laws as developed as those in the U.S.” The US was founded on cruelty & continues to this day. Full-blown fascism is the next step if we don’t fully own our history & learn from it. theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…
Right, because they were attacked, not because they wanted to take down the Nazis. Thanks for the reminder
