Almost everyone right now would be well served reading a basic book about American history. Knowing our historical landscape gives us two gifts: 1/ we’ve been through very, very, very tough times before, and 2/ our pattern over time has always been to self-correct. We will again.

But we have to deal with the original sin. Slavery hasn’t truly gone away, it’s just evolved.

Since the lockdown, I’ve been following @HC_Richardson and watching her talks. Brilliant and comforting to be with thousands of others. Also reading #Caste r n by @Isabelwilkerson - eye opening. I AM hopeful we will get to #RootCauses soon and reveal what #LawAndOrder means 🧡

Circumstances here are very different. You cannot self-correct the current social mess. This needs radical changes which will not be accepted, even by allies.

We still haven't "self-corrected" for the original premise, that propertied interests always get to decide. The Founders changed Locke's "Life, Liberty & Property" to "Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness" in the Declaration of Independence to gull the masses into revolting.

If you read enough history eventually you realize that America has been awful from day one. Pick up “The Unknown Revolution” by Gary Nash if you want a taste or reality.

I reccomend Rutger Bregman's book 'Utopia for Realists' to nearly everyone. Not only is Rutger a historian, but that particular book talks about how positive change is typically inevitable, and fighting agaisnt that change is a losing battle. Have you read that, Marianne?
