Almost everyone right now would be well served reading a basic book about American history. Knowing our historical landscape gives us two gifts: 1/ we’ve been through very, very, very tough times before, and 2/ our pattern over time has always been to self-correct. We will again.

I believe the election of Trump was part of one of those self-corrections. He's a push-back against the "progressive" policies of the welfare state. I'm hoping there is a similar push-back against the warfare state.

Hmmm...thought Americans went to school to learn about themselves...common knowledge Americans go to school to learn how to obey their bosses

All the major voices think the self correction that's needed is for poor people to shut up and do as they are told by duplicitous millionaires and billionaires. It's going to be hard to solve that in this new connected world.

Ken Burns' documentaries are worthwhile pandemic viewing (The Roosevelts and The Civil War were favorites) pbs.org/franchise/ken-burns/

We just need to vote out all the mean liberals. Liberalism today is fascism.

Well, a long time ago, I did pass my AP US History exam. However, I do have to admit that 20th century US history is a weakness of mine. Which book(s) would you recommend? Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States” has been sitting on my bookshelf largely unread.

And one lesson from that history is that we can't just fight for change then lapse into complacency once changes are implemented. An active, engaged, and attentive citizenry is what keeps government accountable.

Scientists give the human race 150 years til extinction. I don’t think this or the next generation will “self correct.”
