I was with you until the last clause. People actually do care, they're just bad at thinking things through.
(Very few people have no concern for the lives of others. Almost everyone has a tough time evaluating tradeoffs in complicated situations.)
At what point do we admit to ourselves that only an insane society risks massive loss of life among its children in order to procure the ability to risk massive loss of life among their parents in order to avoid massive losses of money among those who don’t care about either one?

For the sake of our country, I hope you’re right and I’m wrong on this one. But I don’t think so. I think we have so financialized our fundamental analysis of America’s problems that as a society we’re desensitized to the suffering of millions.
