Americans are now pathologically habituated to asking “Pretty please?” for things that can literally mean the difference between life and death, from a system that’s pathologically habituated to telling them no as often as it says yes. And only the people can change this.

The system is incentivised to say No more often than yes. It's called a quarterly earnings report.
