1/ When I was young and we were protesting the Vietnam war etc., there was a sense that the Democratic Party was the establishment arm of the counterculture.

2/ Today, in too many cases that’s changed. When right wing populists do their thing, the Republican party embraces them. But when left wing populists do their thing, corporate Democrats say “We don’t know those people.”

3/ That leaves too many people feeling they have no voice within the political system, and the Democratic Party frustrated that more people aren’t using electoral politics as a vehicle of change.

4/ The Republican party has more elitist policies but an oddly more egalitarian relationship to its own constituency. The Democratic Party has more egalitarian policies but an oddly more elitist relationship to its own constituency. This needs to change.

The republicans are definitely not more elitist when it comes to science. That’s one of the more dangerous things about typical right populism in America.

Both parties are run by rich old white people. But the democrats have a base of marginalized people of color. Democratic leadership do not see their base as equal citizens. They do not even see them as equals to your typical republican.

This is very well put. I've had conversations with constituents about this, but none of us have been able to articulate it quite this well.

Marianne, big fan of your insights! Hoping you can answer why a 3rd party hasn’t been successfully formed, there’s no way the current 2 represent the views of everyone, esp. as their stances become so polarized. There must be a better choice independent of superpacs and lobby.

That's how we got Trump. He was a democrat in 1986 on Larry King Live fielding questions about a presidential run. He knew he could not get through the democrat establishment gauntlet to the nomination. He bacame a Republican and here we are.

That will change when our party stops taking corporate money and supports progressives.

To me, it seems like the "right wing populists, Republican party, & corporate Democrats" are curtains for the country's privileged power-wielders. They ALL chant “We don’t know those people," regarding left wing populists to maintain dominance & hide behind veils of tribalism.

We need more progressives elected to drown out the noise of the Corporate DNC. It can happen if we continue down the path of Bernie's #NotMeUs "Get engaged" in running for school boards, city/county offices, state offices, Governorships, the House and Senate, & follow Judgeships
