1/ When I was young and we were protesting the Vietnam war etc., there was a sense that the Democratic Party was the establishment arm of the counterculture.

2/ Today, in too many cases that’s changed. When right wing populists do their thing, the Republican party embraces them. But when left wing populists do their thing, corporate Democrats say “We don’t know those people.”

3/ That leaves too many people feeling they have no voice within the political system, and the Democratic Party frustrated that more people aren’t using electoral politics as a vehicle of change.

4/ The Republican party has more elitist policies but an oddly more egalitarian relationship to its own constituency. The Democratic Party has more egalitarian policies but an oddly more elitist relationship to its own constituency. This needs to change.

I remain alienated by my own party. Our relationship is one-sided. I support them, they pretend I don’t exist. If the Dem Party were a person, my friends would advise me to leave the abusive relationship and seek help.

Does the Democratic Party actually want to be a vehicle of change..?

There’s a huge divide within the Democratic Party between the corporate arm that doesn’t really want to, and the progressive arm that very much does. Unfortunately corporate Dems spend tens of millions of dollars suppressing progressive candidates in primaries around the country.

If one feels as though they don’t have a voice, maybe they should ask themselves why their “voice” is so contingent on belonging to a group. Nobody can take your voice away other than you.

I feel this way. A woman without a party. Can’t get behind either candidate and so tired of voting for the least worst. Where are the leaders that are moderates??

I agree. I am forever disappointed by this party, yet in the last two election cycles It has been clear that voting blue was literally the only thing to do. I wish we could get the majority to vote against party politics and for actual change. You were my top pick Marianne.

The Democrat party (they'll earn the "ic" when they do the democratic thing & finally @OpenTheDebates and not before!) COOPERATES FULLY WITH THE GOP ON THEIR BELOVED @debates SCAM, Marianne. Why SHOULD we cooperate with the scam? I understand non-voters rationally not voting.
