I understand why Williamson says this, but the framing isn't quite right. It's the Left that often insists that "the personal is political," and the Right is very concerned with its own "public morality" (law and order, imperialist foreign policy).
1/ Traditionally the Right has focused on issues of private morality while the Left has focused on issues of public morality. But framing things in a moral context is important because people are hardwired for it; when it's absent they're more vulnerable to a counterfeit version.

But the issue itself is private rather than public. We're losing on the abortion issue because they see it as a moral issue and try to make it look like we don't. I think abortion IS a moral issue but I trust a woman to make her own moral decisions w/out govt making them for her.
