We have a system that demonizes the poor, passively abuses children by withholding education & opportunity, wages war casually, denies healthcare to millions, tolerates systemic racism - but takes every care not to inconvenience those with 3 homes, a plane, 10 cars and 2 yachts.

Because of money in politics. Military defense contractors, health insurance and pharmaceutical companies give so much money to politicians that the needs of the people are sacrificed.

I’d add that our economy requires domination of other country’s resources and that takes a constant threat to its population. Our GDP requires these industries to dominate.
