We care a lot when we see one child suffer. But there's a weird cognitive dissonance when it comes to millions of them. It becomes blurred, as though the sheer magnitude of the problem makes it seem less rather than more urgent and ourselves powerless instead of empowered to fix.

This is a huge problem ❤️ One child = Oh no 😭 One * 1,000,000 children = Eh, what can I do?

Because a million becomes a political tool in our corrupt world of governance

The old saying "out of sight, out of mind." Folks tune into Corporate media to find out who we love or hate on daily basis. This kind of blind trust has killed more men, women and children than could be counted. You can't feel your leash if you sit by the peg all day.

So true Mairanne! A knee jerk response to say "Oh well I guess this is a new normal"....Ugh!! It is time for bitter hearts to be softened and values and priorities to be given more time for pondering and then making decisions.

Because the world is built on and perpetuates us v. them. The one child who is “ours” is 1000% more important then “theirs”. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, and it’s tragic. A massive number of children, and we can’t picture one adorable, camera-ready, sympathetic face. Also, many people still buy into the trope that the masses living in poverty somehow deserve it (even children?!).

@krystalball said recently that the pandemic has “broken the mythology” that the US economy is a just one, and that that mythology will not be coming back. I hope she is right.

Most people cannot comprehend the big picture, even moreso understand a problem when it's large amounts of people or a nebulous threat like climate change. We are a country conditioned to avoid context and critical thinking.
