If the Big Pharma monopolies and cartels refuse to compete ... then the government must compete, start up production, and/or step in and regulate price.
A harsh example of the quirks of our healthcare system, but both ways. The insulin producers make slight tweaks which take absorption up by a tiny %, then jack up the price. But consumers, not paying directly, want that tiny % improvement, even though the cost benefit isn't there
By chance my wife is a Type 1 diabetic. Insulin pumps are one of the few technologies in the world where the price keeps going up. Someday somebody is going to do an open source pump and the price will drop from $6k to under $1k
