1/ When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, 41 of the 56 signers were slaveowners. The principles of the Declaration were not descriptions of what we yet embodied, but a statement of the ideals every generation should further. youtube.com/0LyzI81HDdw via @YouTube

2/ Every generation lives out the American struggle: On one hand we’re based on the most aspirational and enlightened principles ever to inform the founding of a nation & on the other hand we’ve been at times the most violent perpetrators of transgression against those principles

3/ Few generations have had so much to think about on July 4. Who will we, in our time, decide to be?

The American Revolution was fought to preserve slavery & permit colonists to have their own guns to kill indians rather than pay taxes for the British to do it. The South rose up years later in resistance to the double cross of slavery's abolition. What we celebrate is a fiction.

That’s true. What concerns me is that we’re missing something else. I believe it’s empathy. It’s there, but it’s all but been bred out of popular culture. Marianne named it early on via normalized suffering. America doesn’t teach compassion, love or empathy. That’s a problem.

How can a president be allowed to use tax payer funds to be used on a sacred day to self promote himself and his party creating further division and disharmony amongst its citizens ??- can anyone explain this to a confused Australian.

Strangely enough ... I have three women in one of my esoteric groups who are Right Wingers ... They think the virus is way over reported ... and are encouraging me to drive 5 hours to a meeting out of State ... stopping at rest stops used by thousands ... I think NOT ...

Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸 I choose to celebrate by recognizing 2 people from whom everything was stolen to make America and they fought back. Look them up. Cochise was an Apache Chief who resisted. Joseph Cinqué was enslaved and led a resistance on the slave ship La Amistad.
