Yes. Depending on ones point of view, the US has always been uniquely blessed (or cursed) with an ongoing challenge of having to fight for greater justice for all to survive as a nation. Let's hope "the long arc of history" shows that despite all the pain, it's been a blessing.

That's the contradiction at the root of all liberalism, especially the "classical" variety. It espouses high-minded ideals of rights and freedom, but prioritizes Capitalism above all. Yet, Capitalism is fundamentally opposed to any concept of freedom or rights except property.
