I understand “defund the police” isn’t the best language, but where was all the outrage when they were defunding education, defunding Headstart, defunding hunger & anti-poverty programs, defunding violence prevention programs, defunding peace projects & defunding social services?

It's actually the correct language and it should go further than that. Not just defund, but starting from the ground up and rethinking what it means to protect the people. All the people. Because we've been living in a police state forever and that's unacceptable.

I reject the idea that "defund" isn't the "best language." Language & acts that make people uncomfortable are always the "best language" bc power concedes nothing without demand. Demand is not a fluffy, feel good request & the language that supports such demand can't be either!

I certainly do think that ‘defund’ is a much less positive spin than fund programs that would improve the lives of citizens, and reduce the ‘crime’ that the cops are trying to stop But it’s also much less confrontational than what we mean: abolish policing as we know it

The only issue I have it isn't fully clear what people want to replace the police or fix the police.

after a week of debating "language", I can't help but think it's lazy. #DefundThePolice opens up the conversation we should be having. Instead of criticizing, why aren't we all asking questions and listening to the answers? $ should be the focus. Budget, pensions, overtime, etc

Doesn't matter. This is here NOW. And people are being killed! We don't need you Monday morning quarterbacking!
