In the interest of his country, Mark Zuckerberg should shut down Facebook until after the election. We lived without it before and we can survive a few months without it. So might our democracy. #FacebookTakeABreak

FB is a platform where countless people express, inform, help and support each other, so, not a good idea, to put it mildly.

Why do liberals feel like they must suppress speech to win elections?

That's a pretty radical idea. I think it would do us a world of good on a bunch of different levels.

Heya, Marianne. I love your readings and policy ideas, but you didn't provide much rationale behind shutting down Facebook specifically. It seems counterintuitive to shut down/limit specific online platforms. Just like how Tumblr traffic ended up going to Twitter.

Nah. If people wish to rely on Facebook as their primary source of information instead of wishing to study through more reliable means, that’s on them. What’s next? Shutting down all social media and news outlets until the election?

If you think that Mark Zuckerberg cares more about America than he does about Facebook, I have some troubling news.

And what about the very people trapped in their houses right now? This pandemic is targeting the older and at risk population, which also happens to be the primary demographic of Facebook. For some it’s their only connection.
