So about those mayors that we all thought were pretty socially enlightened guys. Is it that they were lying the whole time, or that they themselves are scared and are basically incapable of controlling their police forces? Trying to figure this one out.

Marianne, you fool. It’s because of party politics. Which you are now part of. Giving so much power to the parties = nothing getting done. Maybe encourage R’s and D’s to work together, instead of trying the crown D’s as the rightful heir to elections.

Probably scared, and that's the issue. Police forces have become rogue organizations.

Those "socially enlightened" guys want many laws to require permits, ban things and activities, and generally enforce their views. In the process, they give power to people with badges who will abuse that power. You can't have one without the other.

I believe both are true to an extent. American political culture puts great pressure on them to back & support all public agencies. If a police union turns on their mayor it's political suicide. Politicians always seem more concerned with keeping power than serving the people.
