I have an argument with a friend where I support free college, Medicare4All, Green New Deal etc. & she tells me we need an "incremental approach;" that such things are "too far left." I tell her they're centrist in Europe. She says "We're not Europe." I bang my head against a wall

You realize that it isn’t free? You do realize those who have businesses and non-profits may not have to pay as much taxes as they should? You do realize that the burden for payment for “free” lies on the backs of hard working Amerucans; Nothing is free.

Let's flip on a light switch. But incrementally, of course

green new deal is anti nuclear. free college should not come before pharmacare.

Gee I don’t know, Marianne, sounds like a coherent position and argument to me! Such things in the wealthiest nation in human history are certainly pie in the sky.

I would tell her that she really enjoys being a corporate slave. It sounds like time to get a new friend.

You both are wrong, the policies are where they are on the political spectrum. European countries accepted Social Democratic policies decades and decades ago, the US hasn't. That just means we have policied further to the right.

Does that mean everyone that has gone to college gets a refund and those that didn’t get one as well? It’s only fair.

We’re still approaching civil rights and equality ‘incrementally’, how’s that all been working out?

She's right, we are not Europe. We do some things better, & some things worse. Why are we so loathe to admit when we do things wrong? I see success as defined by taking the best from different sources, & coming up with a stronger synthesis. And absolutely so for social policy.

Your friend is right, you don't radically flip complex systems overnight and expect one morning to wake up as a Centrist Europe. Success would come from well thought out integration strategies and realistic goals for the advancement of our life experiences.
