Conservatives tend to emphasize more of America has done right & progressives tend to emphasize more of what America has done wrong. The higher truth lies in realizing both: loving our ideals and possibilities enough to be brutally honest with ourselves about what has gone wrong.

The difficulty arises when we disagree as to what has gone wrong. We conservatives would say that high taxes and expensive social programs (on top of pork spending and kickbacks) are two of the things that have caused damage to the Republic. -Congress is a Council of Pirates.
