My late godfather, my Uncle Bob, was a #VietnamVet in the #MichiganMilitia and a proud member of the #NRA, and if he was alive today, he would probably have been on the steps of the capitol building armed and waving a #Confederate flag. No, really.

He was also a Michigan #CivilWar re-enactor on the Confederate side, so he had all the gear... Does it make sense? Not to me.
But does that mean I loved him any less? He holds a very special place in my heart. ❤️

AND, I disagreed with him on SO many issues. Seriously, SO many. But if we only react, rage, fight against the people we disagree with, how can we ever expect to understand another viewpoint and ideally facilitate change or at the very least compromise?

The last phone call I had with Uncle Bob (2 months before he died), he said some racist things... I disagreed with his viewpoints, but I calmly let him talk, and then I, calmly, presented a different perspective. He didn’t completely agree with my take on it but conceded a bit.

It’s not easy to change someone’s belief systems especially if they’ve held those beliefs for decades, but we can try. We can start. We can choose to be calm, considerate, compassionate.

Those of you who know me personally know that I follow @marwilliamson and attended @RenUnity when I lived in #MetroDetroit when Marianne was the spiritual leader there. I have always loved her idea of a Department of Peace rather than a Department of Defense.
