To stand up for the most traditional pillars of American democracy - from freedom of speech to justice for our citizens to electoral integrity - is to risk being labeled a left wing extremist. The biggest challenge in America today is to avoid the temptation to simply give up.

That temptation is a huge challenge indeed. The vast majority of my personal circle with whom I've shared political dialogue for years has gone nearly silent since mid-March. I keep reminding myself of Don Johnson's worn quote from Miami Vice: "It ain't over till it's over."
