The system we have now is not guided by compassion, it is guided by amoral economic principles. The shadow side of American capitalism is literally an unsustainable organizing principle for a survivable 21st century. Ethics and concern for the common good must be our bottom line.

American capitalism has raised 100's of millions out of abject poverty. Its the most compassionate economic system in human history. We have enough wealth that we voluntarily give more to charity than any other country.

Actually we do not. We give only .06% of our discretionary funding to humanitarian issues, far less than every other advanced democratic country. Capitalism has done a lot of good, it’s true, but it’s shadow side has done a lot of harm as well. Time to restore its conscience.
