The system we have now is not guided by compassion, it is guided by amoral economic principles. The shadow side of American capitalism is literally an unsustainable organizing principle for a survivable 21st century. Ethics and concern for the common good must be our bottom line.

I’m not an anti-capitalist. I think the most enlightened societies have elements of capitalism and socialism. In social democracies it’s both/and. The free market is good; it’s just that not enough people in America can get into it now! To tens of millions of people it’s not free
