if you go back to the origin or the grant of the corporate charter in the US, back in the 1790s, you see the start of the separation of civic duty from the enterprise. So, when a CEO claims maximizing shareholder value is the sin qua non of his/her role, the truth becomes clear.

Greed consumed us over 6 thousand yrs ago resulting in the Assyrian Empire - the first civilization. The wealthy exploited the poor. Women became second class citizens. Society was terrified for its future. We haven't learned why. Until we do we can expect more of the same.
