There’s a reason why Bernie keeps mentioning FDR. He realizes that for millions of people today the situation is as dire as what many people were experiencing then. We need a massive infusion of economic opportunity into the life of the average American - and we need it fast.

My father grew up during the Depression in dire poverty. Almost 40 million Americans live in poverty today and 500,000 Americans are homeless. 100,000 of the homeless are children. You bet their despair matters as much as his did. He’s the one who taught me that.

So if I’m a homeless person today, my pain doesn’t matter as much because I’m in a smaller group than existed during the Great Depression? That makes no sense. Perhaps read my original tweet again. I did not compare the size of the groups. I compared the pain of the people.
