Many of the people yelling “Bernie could never beat Trump!” know in their hearts that maybe he could - but they themselves don’t want it so they’re just saying that. “He’s too extreme!” What an age we’re living in, that healthcare and education and justice for all seem “extreme.”

Bernie will make Trump look sane and moderate. Bernie is the surest path to defeat for the Democrats, so it's very possible that they will choose it. Democrats subconsciously know that Trump is good for them and their families and their futures.

Looking from an outsider point of view to US politics, I think 'too extreme' should be taken in the context of US politics. The current system is 'take care of yourself'; a switch to 'free' can be seen as very extreme for many Americans. Maybe middle ground would have more chance

I don't think that's true. People are stuck in their own perception bubbles and in a general they are going against a president that has 95% approval on the republican side.
