For most of US history, this was not the case. My point is that letting the voters completely decide the party nominee can cause dissension in the party. That is one of the reasons many Democrats didn't vote for Hillary which contributed to her losing that in 2016.
If you look at the actual votes in the 2016 primary Hillary had more but many Bernie supporters still didn't support her. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Result…
