I’m not romanticizing American capitalism or American govt before the 1980s, but I can honestly tell you this: America wasn’t always the good guy but there was a general consensus we were supposed to be. When we weren’t, we were mentally healthy enough to hang our heads in shame.

Except as concerns the American Slave Trade and its legacy.

If you tell the Truth long enough, loud enough-and in as many places using as many social media resources as possible-all the people will come to believe it. Unfortunately. the same goes for lies.

We just hadn’t gone full mask off yet. We overthrew Iran’s democracy in 1953 but the CIA didn’t admit its involvement in the coup against Mossadegh until Aug 2013

And now we've become savages. Celebrating the death of our enemy. Beholden to the demons of fear, dominance, and pride.

Marianne - we need to stop peddling this idea of “good” guy/ “bad” guy. It simply doesn’t exist. There are good and bad choices. I’m also not sure if I agree with you that America used to know how to be remorseful after bad actions throughout the world.

America has been peddling the concept of American Exceptionalism for all of its history. This is the root of our arrogant and failed foreign policy decicions. Yes, we are special. But no more special than anyone else. That’s the part we constantly miss.
