On campaign stops I ask for a show of hands if someone’s heard young people say they’re not gonna have kids cuz they don’t see how they can make it happen given the economy, environment etc. Several always do. Such hopelessness should not exist in the richest country in the world

When I heard Meathead express the same thing in the 70’s on All in the Family I decided he was right. For me, it’s a realization that you should be at your best before being a parent, not just follow social norms to procreate. I’m encouraged by those who hesitate to follow.

Economic and environmental concerns are distantly secondary in my decision not to have children. My primary concern is my fundamental unsuitability to be a good parent. The vast majority of my contemporaries share that sentiment. That's not hopelessness; that's realism.
