The debates are essentially a reality TV show in which the DNC partners with corporate media to choose & exalt the candidates they feel should be in the running. It is an incestuous insider game, perhaps well intentioned on the part of its perpetrators but poisonous to democracy.

They're not really even debates. Each side of the political spectrum should put up a hand full of interviewers who interview each candidate. An hour with Preet Bahara (center left), and hour with Ben Shapiro(libertarian/conservative), and hour with Cenk Uygur(foreign caliphate)

And a bunch of avowed leftists who saw what the DNC did in 2016, still were saying that the debates were too crowded and the DNC should essentially eliminate those competitors after 2 debates. It was insane.
