It's an ideal; it's never been fully actualized but it's the job of every generation to further it. There has been evil yes, but others have met the challenges to eradicate it and now it's our turn. From Abolition to Suffrage to Civil Rights, what others have done now we must do.

To me, putting the ideal on a pedestal is what makes me so clear when the material reality doesn't match it. It's what motivates and inspires me to get it right, to close the gap between the two, to make it happen. It keeps the goal in sight. Same thing, different words I think.
