The USA will reinstate sanctions against Iran on Monday. Just to be clear, sanctions do not hurt governments; they hurt innocent men, women & children...who among things, are then told that their misery is due to the Americans. It’s never good policy to purposefully inflict pain.

Which then feeds extremism. I hadn’t thought of it that way before.

Sanctions work to curb the unacceptable behaviour of dictatorial elites. They have in part kept Putin from invading all of Ukraine.

They might have a place in certain situations. In this one, I don’t see it.

Can you suggest an alternative option?

Yes. The Iran nuclear deal.

Sanctions against a regime that hangs gays and stones women are, sadly, exactly what is needed. How many more will suffer when they have nuclear weapons to go along with their promises of Death to Israel? The Iranian people must overthrow the Mullahs.

And you think sanctions are going to help that?

Your analysis is not complete. You are right sanctions inflict pain on the public, that public, particularly the Iranian public are tired of feeling the pain, and are rebelling against a corrupt theocracy who uses aid WE gave them to inflict their own pain/killing on others.

Sounds good except there is no actual basis to that. If anything, it’s making the population of Iran more sympathetic to their own government. You think people who can’t get medicine for their children now are going to say “Oh thank you America!” ?
