America’s biggest problem is the disconnect between our policies and our values. And no that did not just start with Donald Trump. Rejecting him at the polls - although important - will not be enough to jumpstart our democracy. For that we have to become again who we say we are.

Even before that we are struggling to even know what our values are. Even beloved concepts like equality and freedom have a tension between them. Too much of one takes from the other. Yet those open conversations that lead to understanding are not happening enough.
That assumes we ever were who we said we were. 1/3 of the country has not left the 1860's and the notion that the Confederacy will still rise. We are not one country with one heart and that is part of what we must face and work through.
