The Law of Cause & Effect is unalterable. Atonement means we take responsibility for loveless thought and behavior, reprogramming Effects by changing things on the level of Cause. It is a cosmic reset button, reconciling our hearts with God & giving us the chance to begin again.

Atonement/at-one-ment. “Sin” in Hebrew shares its root with the word “miss the mark.” Reading of Book of Jonah today as it conveys human struggle, escaping vs. rising to our divine calling and compassion vs. righteousness. A day to forgive ourselves, reset course, and rise again.
