I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment that it is a "given" or "should" and certainly the new part. This is not a new phenomena It is a twisted message to send women and men that women's agency and freedom should be curtailed in as simple of an act as being in nature

No one has said that a woman’s agency or freedom should be curtailed. That’s not what this conversation is about at all. It’s simply a realization among responsible people that there is a pattern of violence against women hiking and jogging alone that should not be ignored.

The statement no woman should is an absolute and puts the emphasis in the wrong place. It is a solution that solves nothing and puts fear and misplaced responsibility on future victims.

I hear the "no woman should ever jog alone" through girl's and young women's ears and wonder how much that shrinks their world of possibilities and thoughts. What adventures may be only for their brothers? It instills fear not responsibility

At least 1 woman is murdered by an ex or current boyfriend/husband everyday, jogging/hiking or not. For the most part, stranger danger is a myth. Responsible people should demand that males stop raping, murdering and destroying the earth in general.
