We should all be clear: millions of Germans in 30s-40s, when asked if they knew where their neighbors had disappeared to, responded by saying “Oh let’s not think about that! Let’s just be positive!” There is nothing unspiritual about being disturbed in genuinely disturbing times.

I don't think they wanted to be positive. they did not care. most poles asked about the jews after the war said they were glad they were gone. Antisemitism. no spirituality involved there- only evil.

For many, that was very true. For others, years of propaganda had dismantled their critical thought processes; they’d been convinced that European Jewry was a problem that had to be eliminated.
