If I had a magic wand, I would make every American citizen watch an hour-long documentary about Germany in the 1930’s &1940’s.

It’s tough. If you use Germany, you raise the specter of hitler, and that shits down conversation with those you want to reach. Germany’s hardly a precise parallel, but it’s a good example of a populace falling into authoritarianism willingly.
