My mother's father came to America alone when he was 13 yrs old, sold bananas on lower East side of NYC 'til he made enough money to go back to Russia & get his next younger brother, then repeated that 7 times til every sibling & their mother was brought over. THAT is who we are

These tales of our ancestors coming “alone” are inspirational, but let’s not forget there were close social networks in immigrant communities 100 years ago. Children came “alone,” were hired by adults from their village who had migrated previously. They had support from adults
