The fact that you don't know that "I identify as a leftist" means you have not looked to my candidacy at all. At 9% in national polls at this point, it''s not true that I have no popular support. That you personally feel I have no "relevant experience" - that therefore you get to determine whether I even exist as a factor in this election - makes your legitimacy as a journalist as questionable in my mind as my legitimacy as a candidate is questionable in yours.

There is much to be commended about the American character: an entrepreneurial spirit, a can-do sense of possibility that has often moved mountains, a rugged individualism that has led to much success. But there has always been a mean streak among us as well, a collective shadow side that has produced horrors of injustice. Individually, too often our rugged individualism has become rugged narcissism, we acquiesce within ourselves to some of the lowest human traits, and we’re willing to normalize in government and society what should be considered intolerable behavior. MLK Jr. said “we need quantitative changes in our circumstances and qualitative shifts in our souls.” Never more so than now. The first place we need to clean up is our own hearts. We need personal transformation as much as transactional political change. Without the former, the latter will not occur on any fundamental basis. And the time to work on both is now.

I suppose it comes as a shock to you, but people lie. No I’m not on a book tour; that disinformation came from someone who knows nothing about book publishing. No there is no ballot access issue here. The staff turnover on this campaign was no different than any other. And no I’m not a raging witch; that came from people on this campaign who could not honestly tell you that they ever had a cross word with me.

For that reason!

Okay… tell me what all those “experienced”, “qualified” people have done? The Iraq War. 20 years too long in Afghanistan. Trickle down economics. The destruction of America’s middle class. The Crime Bill. Surrender to Big Oil. And the list goes on. We don’t need another political car mechanic. We have plenty of those. Our problem is that we are on the wrong road. (Interesting…I haven’t heard anyone say about either RFK or Cornel that the problem is that they’ve never held office before.)
