Obviously, we need to become as intent on overturning Citizens United as others were for years intent on overturning Roe v. Wade. But given the current make-up of the Supreme Court, it’s unreasonable to think we’re going to be able to do that anytime soon. In the meantime, we have to do everything else possible to counter the effective big money and its undo influence on our politics.

The debt ceiling deal is not an example of good governance and honorable compromise. It sells out the American people and the planet on which we live, protecting the powerful and inflicting harm on the weak and powerless. The Democratic Party should not be a party of spineless compromise with the powers of oligarchy, whether those powers of what FDR called “economic royalism” are Big Oil, Defense contractors, or billionaire donors. Democrats will win in 2024 by rejecting - not supporting - the path of constant acquiescence to the corporate tyrants in our midst.

Just to be clear. In a democracy, you debate your political opposition but you don’t seek to “destroy” it. Only a fascist says I will “destroy it.”

The debt ceiling deal was a negotiation with economic terrorists. It protects those who do not need protection - who if anything should be held more accountable - and it inflicts harm on people who are most vulnerable. Also, it had nothing to do with fiscal responsibility. If McCarthy had really been about fiscal responsibility, he would’ve been open to cutting the military budget as well as letting Biden spend money on IRS agents who would’ve caught wealthy tax cheaters. Situations like this just keep moving the Overton window further and further away from a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

I’ve never excluded UBI. I said that last time, and this time. It does not correct the fundamental flaws of hypercapitalism, but as a stopgap measure (perhaps two to five years?) while the ship is being righted and economic justice is being re-introduced into the system, I think it’s good.
