This is nothing they should be bragging about. The U.S. should not be diminishing our commitment to the principle of asylum. The biggest crisis at the border is the humanitarian crisis for thousands of people now fleeing some of the worst violence imaginable. And much of that violence has been exacerbated by U.S. foreign policy in Latin America over the last 50 years.

Mother’s Day was originally created by mothers of sons who died in the Civil War fighting for the Union, and mothers whose sons died fighting in the war for the Confederacy, gathered together in mutual grief and sorrow. (Read my Mother’s Day substack) open.substack.com/pub/marian…

Paid family leave in the richest country in the world shouldn’t be some fantasy, it should be a reality. I’ve been saying it for 30 years.

She is correct.
New Yorkers are ready to employ and asylum seekers are ready to work. The idea that denying work authorization is an effective deterrent and therefore we shouldn’t let people work is wrong. It keeps people crammed in the system & hurts migrants & citizens alike. Let them work.

The rest of American culture isn’t stuck in the 1980s. Only our politics is—and it’s time to change that.

“We are connected, members of a shared nation and a shared economy, where the advantages of the rich often come at the expense of the poor. But that arrangement is not inevitable or permanent. It was made by human hands and can be unmade by them. We can fashion a new society, starting with our own lives.” - Matthew Desmond @just_shelter , POVERTY, BY AMERICA
